Are Land Rovers overall good, reliable cars?
What are the pros and cons of owning a land rover for a first time car owner?
You do not say which model, nor do you say where you live. Both factors make a difference. The model ranges are the Defender (utilitarian 4WD), Discovery (Mid-range though pretty big), Range Rover (Luxury) and the Freelander, a small/medium cross-over.
If you are in the US or Canada, choose something else: the service support is not always good.
Reliability depends on the model, but here are the common issues,
regardless of the model:
- Oil leaks and other fluid leaks can happen, and often.
- Electrical gremlins, especially in older vehicles, and these can vary from annoying to serious.
- Fragile interior, especially Series 1 and 2 Discoveries.
- Spartan interior on all Defender models. Can be uncomfortable.
- Series 3 Discovery’s and Range Rovers post 1992 are better.
- Freelander had issues with early diesels, since solved.
- Parts can be hard to find in the US or expensive.
PROS:
- Unbeatable offroad, all models except Freelander. Better than anything American or Japanese built, and R Rovers are very comfortable. A Toyota Landcruiser is less charismatic, but will get you nearly as far off road with greater reliability.
- Status, though their rep as a fairly unreliable brand is also an issue.
- First time: unless it is a trusty Series 3 Defender (or maybe later), forget it for a first timer. The servicing expense will kill you.
